History buffs will find a lot to spark their interest here. Cavtat's history begins in the 7th century B.C. when Illyrians founded a town here called Epidaurus. Many trade routes crossed here and the strategic position of the town was very advantageous. In the 4th century Epidaurus was hit by a major earthquake and was nearly destroyed. Time and rulers changed, the city was almost destroyed and only in the 15th century was it reborn to become part of the Dubrovnik Republic under a new name, Cavtat.
